IB Portuguese A/B Teacher: Marcos Nunes de Vilhena
Why Portuguese? Portuguese is the official language of 8 countries in the CPLP Portugal, Brazil, Cape Verde, São Tome e Príncipe, Mozambique, Angola, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea and East Timor. It is also an official language of Macau, which is now part of China, and is still spoken in parts of Goa and Mauritania. All over the world there are vibrant immigrant communities using Portuguese as their first or second language. Moreover, it is the fastest growing European language. One of the largest Portuguese speaking nations is Brazil. Today Brazil is considered by many to be an emerging superpower, whose progress will impact the world. Already Brazil makes its mark hosting the 2016 Olympics, and is known for its passionate music and innovative dance, soccer teams, engineering and architectural. Brazil is also in the forefront of environmental discussions. For careers in government, art, music, dance, engineering, architecture, environmental science, international business and marketing, knowing Portuguese offers you more avenues to explore. What is the course about? Are there any requirements?
This Language and Literature (HL) based course is a recent development in IB Language provision and is suitable for students who have a standard of Portuguese which will allow them to read a variety of texts and/or language comfortably and with enjoyment. A pass equivalent in either GCSE or IGCSE Portuguese Literature at B or above would represent the minimum standard to allow progression in this subject at Standard Level. For Higher Level, the equivalent of a B pass at GCSE or IGCSE would normally be expected. What materials will I need? Apart from an open mind and a willingness to learn, you will not need any materials for the course, as these willbe provided to you. Further reading and Internet resources will be suggested throughout the course. By the way…how often do you go to the library? How will I be evaluated? What will I learn?

Students who have successfully completed the Portuguese A or B course may go on to study many different disciplines at university. The competency and confidence gained in the use and appreciation of how language works is valuable for students who read for a wide range of professions such as teaching, marketing, the media and finance. There is an increasing need in commerce, industry and the professions for people who are analytical in thought and accomplished communicators. A good preparation for this is the study of languages.
